Hello athletes, coaches, parents and regatta volunteers. The world has gone thru some major changes since our last communications. The cancellation of last year’s Royal Canadian Henley Regatta was a disappointment for all those who love this sport. For those coaches and club administrators who managed to keep the kids engaged last summer, I know it wasn’t an easy task, well done, and thank you from the rowing community.
The 2021 Royal Canadian Henley Regatta is scheduled to start Sunday, August 1 with Henley Masters, followed by the traditional Race Week Tuesday, August 2 thru to Sunday, August 8. However, there are some obstacles, many of which are beyond our control to overcome for the regatta to proceed. Including:
Our regatta is unique in the rowing community in that each year over 2500 athletes, 500 coaches and team officials travel from far to compete for Henley Gold. This regatta offers over 155 events, 7 days of racing with up to 100 races per day. Many competitors partake in several events throughout the week.
The Royal Canadian Henley Regatta Joint Commission is a registered not for profit organization. This regatta, like all regattas has expenses and revenue. With most of our expenses being fixed costs, and, with the projected reduction in club membership, there is a potential risk in the reduction of our main revenue source, entry fees. The future of this regatta relies on the host committee being fiscally responsible.
In light of the many factors that need to be considered, the host committee will make a decision in the first week of June as to the viability of this year’s Royal Canadian Henley Regatta.
